Amen

Album: Ol’ Savannah
(Johnson)

Must a man say Grace to win some holy race?
Can I hear an Amen?
I seen a man say Grace and then he stuffed his fat old face
Amen
Sometimes you might find you ain’t got nowhere to go but down
So what does it matter if you’re six feet or more underground?

She said she needs a man to bury in her hands
Can I hear an Amen?
Then she found her man and they were married and life was dandy
Amen
He don’t leave the house no more, she’s got him down on all fours
He’s so tired and what’s more, he can’t even pick himself up off the floor

He’d give her coffee with her toast and give honey in her tea
Can I hear an Amen?
He’d add carrots to the roast and give her crackers with her cheese
Amen
He’d marinade a tenderloin and barbecue a chicken thigh for her
But the one time he did something wrong, she poured hot water straight into his eyes and left him blind

He didn’t even get a seeing-eye dog so he walked around like he was lost in some kind of fog
Can I hear an Amen?
But when he heard a drifter’s song, he said I think I’ll sing along
Amen
I’m a rolling stone all alone and lost
For this life of sin surely I have paid the cost

He said “I’m taking my baby with me, y’see, she won’t ever get away from me”
Can I hear an Amen?
“I’ve been blind for way too long, but now I see how to sing my song”
Amen
“I’ll take her down to the ocean and give her one last word before dying
Then I’ll chuck her body overboard and let it drift for a thousand miles”

And she said, “I can’t pretend that I want this to be the end”
Can I hear an Amen?
“We started off as friend but then we wound up being enemies”
Amen
“So go ahead and do me in, I ain’t got no worries anymore
And I hope you rot in hell my dear and when you die I’ll see you there for sure”
